REI presents, "Winter Outdoor Emergency Preparedness"

We are patterning with REI to bring fun education classes to Caboose Commons! Our first class is, "Winter Outdoor Emergency Preparedness."

Every time you step into the backcountry, whether you're hiking, snowshoeing, or ski touring, be prepared to help yourself and others in the event of an accident or emergency. This class will give you some basic tips on minimizing your chances of being in a survival situation and how to respond if you are. We will discuss planning ahead, dressing in layers, and what you might want to bring (beyond the ten essentials). You will be able to enjoy a winter outing more confidently knowing that you are well prepared to help yourself and your group face a variety of situations.

The class is free, but you must sign up ahead of time, here.

Waking Up in 2019: 3 Simple Practices That Can Change Your World

Forget New Year’s resolutions… Start 2019 with fresh eyes, a clear mind, and a full heart. You’ll learn how to hone three specific, do-able habits, that provide a much-needed ballast to the crazy of everyday life. You’ll leave with proof that your inner peace has nothing to do with world events, family drama, or what the scale says after a month of Season’s Eatings. We’ll use mindfulness, the neuroscience of happiness, and a good sense of humor to guide us in this exploration.

Trisha Stotler is the Executive Director of The Insight Shop in Vienna, a community classroom space offering novel workshops and free events for adults and kids 10+. She’s also a senior teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and host of the Northern Virginia Death Cafe series. For more information, visit www.insightshopva.com.

"Waking Up in 2019: Three Simple Practices That Can Change Your World" is a part of our up and coming education series at Caboose Commons. Throughout 2019, we will offer several free educational classes to our guests, to support continued growth in our community and lifestyles. Please check in to our website and Facebook events page to learn more about future events.

Common Ground Open Mic

Common Ground Open Mic

Common Ground Open Mic is a platform for poets, writers, and songwriters to get together to share and discuss ideas. The second Tuesday of each month, Caboose Commons will provide an event space to publicly share literary work in a safe space. Open Mic will be themed to promote awareness to a topic or theme of life. Things may be light and fun, or dark and sorrowful, but in the light and darkness of life we stand together, support one another, and speak as one voice, the voice of humanity. Here we all stand on a common ground shared by humanity.

Please feel free to share your work prior to the event, in our Common Ground Open Mic group. The group is for people to post their poetry and offer critiques and conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1841073016014877/about/
